On Christmas Eve, a National Geographic Society expedition spotted an Antarctic gonate squid at the outer edge of the Powell Basin in the Southern Ocean.
This rare species had previously only been seen in fishing nets or as remnants in the stomachs of fished marine animals. The exciting find helps researchers form theories around its habitats and daily life: https://on.natgeo.com/BRYT202506101
